MSDS實際上是一份全面的技術性說明書，側重于危害提示和安全操作指引。一份完整的MSDS報告一般涵蓋如下16項內容：

Section 2：Information on Hazardous Ingredients——成分信息

Section 3：Hazard identification——危害識別信息

Section 4：First Aid Measures——急救措施

Section 5：Fire Fighting Measures——消防措施

Section 6：Accidental Release Measures——意外泄露處置措施

Section 7：Handling and Storage——操作處置與儲存

Section 8：Exposure Control/Personal Protection——接觸控制與個體防護

Section 9：Physical and Chemical Properties——物理化學性質

Section 10：Stability and Reactivity——穩定性與反應活性

Section 11：Toxicology Information——毒理學資料

Section 12：Ecological Information——生態學資料

Section 13：Disposal Considerations——廢棄處置信息

Section 14：Transportation Information——運輸資料信息

MSDS似乎在海運當中更常見，為什么呢？也許是因為化工品等產品空運時都需要提供《航空運輸條件鑒別報告書》Identification and Classification Report for Air Transport of Goods，俗稱空運鑒定或鑒定，但是海運沒有類似這樣的鑒定，所以就要通過MSDS來判斷是否適合運輸。而航空運輸貨物因為有《航空運輸條件鑒別報告書》，就沒必要再提供MSDS了。
